Langley Takes 1st Annual Ping Pong Tourney on Dec 07, 2006
Madison, Wisc.- As the bicycle industry gathered in September on
the floor of the Sands Convention Center to wander amidst the glitz and glamour
of next year's hot new products, 16 players were going head to head in the 2006
Planet Bike-Interbike Invitational Ping Pong Tournament. After two days of open play and player selection, the
tournament itself got underway on the final day of the show. With $3000 on the line, players came from all
corners of the industry and included: Momentum Magazine Editor Amy Walker, Cove
freerider Geoff Gulevich, Smart E-tailing's Jim Langley, George Majors of Bike
Wagon, Planet Bike's very own Erik Olson, Steve Fong of Pleasant Hill Cyclery,
and other shop owners and employees.
The championship round pitted bicycle aficionado Langley against Majors, a former National Ping Pong champion. The odds makers favored Majors, but in the end it was Langley's relentless and steady style that guided him to victory. The victory won Langley the 1st Place trophy, a Planet Bike Alias HID light and $2000 donated in his name to the Paul Clark Bicycling Safety Fund. Majors didn't walk away empty handed, he scored a Alias SC light and Planet Bike made a $1000 donation to Trips For Kids in his name.
The tournament and open play were well received as a fun
distraction this year and the Planet Bike staff is already making plans for
next years Second Annual Tournament.
