Adventure Cycling is Inspiring Cyclist to Explore the World on Two Wheels
Posted on Nov 14th 2025 |At Planet Bike, we believe in the power of the bicycle to transform lives—and few organizations embody that spirit like the Adventure Cycling Association. Since the 1970s, this Montana-based nonprofit has been inspiring and equipping cyclists to explore the world on two wheels.
Adventure Cycling’s roots trace back to a bold idea: a cross-country ride to celebrate the U.S. Bicentennial. That dream became Bikecentennial ’76, drawing over 4,000 riders and laying the foundation for the iconic TransAmerica Trail. Today, the organization supports more than 25,000 members and maintains over 70,000 miles of mapped routes.
One of their most ambitious projects is the U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS), a growing network of officially recognized cycling routes spanning more than 18,000 miles. Adventure Cycling plays a critical role in coordinating federal, state, and local partners to bring this vision to life. When complete, the USBRS will be the largest public bike route network in the world.

Their flagship publication, Adventure Cyclist, is the only North American magazine dedicated solely to bicycle travel, filled with inspiring stories, gear reviews, and trip reports.
Members also gain access to an unparalleled library of cycling maps and resources, including over 275 curated routes with detailed information on services like campgrounds, food stops, and bike shops.
